It is time to upgrade from version 8.5 to 8.5.1.1

Since the beginning of the week, I have been have been trying to update my Rational Test Workbench environment to the latest version and fix pack. Frankly speaking to update the Rational Test Workbench from version 8.5 to 8.5.1.1 shouldn’t have taken me this long. Yet, it did. One of the major road blocks was I wasted my time downloading the wrong package. I know that I need Rational Integration Tester (RIT) because this is the tool that I use to create my virtual services and to create, record and execute my stubs, but I just couldn’t find the component that I was looking for.

Any how, to help save you time from having to spin your wheels like I did. I have put together a quick summary on what you have to download, what are the offerings in each fix pack and how to upgrade your test environment from version 8.5 to 8.5.1.1

What are the components offered in each fix pack?

Before, you go ahead with downloading a bunch of fix packs. It’s very important to know what are the products included inside of these offering so, that you can download the right package for your products installation and/or upgrade. The following are a quick recap of what each fix pack contains.

1. Rational Test Workbench (RTW) Offering Contains

    • Rational Installation Manager (IM) version 1.7.1
    • Rational Performance Tester (RPT)
    • Rational Test Workbench Eclipse client (RTW Eclipse Client)
    • Rational Functional Tester (RFT)
    • Rational Test Control Panel (RTCP)
    • Rational Integration Tester (RIT)
    • Rational Integration Tester Platform Pack (RITPP)

2. Rational Performance Test Server (RPTS) Offerings contains

    • Rational Installation Manager (IM) version 1.7.1
    • Rational Performance Tester Agent (RPT)
    • Rational Integration Tester Agent (RITA)

3. Rational Test Virtualization Server (RTVS) Offerings contains

    • Rational Installation Manager (IM) version 1.7.1
    • Rational Performance Tester Agent (RPT)
    • Rational Test Control Panel (RTCP)
    • Rational Integration Tester Agent (RITA)
    • Rational Integration Tester Platform Pack (RITPP)

As I have mentioned in one of my post for the Test Virtualization environment. It has four key components, which are :

    1. Rational Integration Tester. This are the main tools
      • To create the virtual services
      • To create, record and executed the stubs
      • To create a model of the system under test
    1. Rational Test Control Panel. This is where you will use it
      • To manage dashboard, create, share and deploy your virtualized test environments
      • To manage instances of the Rational Integration Tester engines and technologies specific component in Rational Integration Tester Platform Pack
    1. Rational Integration Tester Agent. The Integration Tester Agent is used for
      • Handling different task for virtual integrated environment systems
      • Providing web access to test results repository to RTCP
      • Host for virtual services, load driver engines for performance testing or just proves for monitoring
    1. Rational Integration Tester PlatForm Pack. This is the platform pack that contains/provides support for various technologies component such as
      • HTTP/TCP Proxy
      • JDBC Proxy
      • IBM® WebSphere® MQ for z/OS Intercept Exit
      • SIBUS Intercept Mediator (NEW)
      • IBM® Rational® Test Control Panel Ant Client
      • IBM® CICS® Transaction Gateway Proxy
      • IBM® CICS® Transaction Server Proxy
      • Java Virtualization Agent
      • Java Virtualization Proxy (NEW)
      • HTTP Proxy Configuration Tool

Note: NEW = The new supported technologies that IBM Rational recently added

Therefore before you proceed with your product updates from version 8.5 to version 8.5.1.1. Please take a look at your exiting environment and spend some time on what you have installed and configured previously. Then download the fix pack that you will need.

Where to search and download all the fix packs (products updates)?

  1. Search and download for fix packs from fix Central
    • It will ask for you to log-in with your IBM ID and password
    • Under Product selector, type in the product that you want to download
    • Installed Version (Select the version that you want to download, the latest version will be the first choice on the drop down list)
    • Platform (select your platform. IE: Linux)
    • Continue

  1. Download the components that you need Note: Notice that in this example, Fix Pack: 8.5.1.1-Rational-RTVS-groupfixpack. You will not get the Rational Integration Test component. Therefore if your environment setup that you want to upgrade requires the Rational Integration Tester (RIT), you will have to go back to step 1 and download the Rational Integration Tester version 8.5.1.1 from the Rational Test Workbench fix pack 8.5.1.1

donwlonadRTW

  1. Extract all the fix packs make sure that it is the same repository as what you have previously used for your silent installation configuration file for version 8.5

How to use the silent installation to updates the test environment from version 8.5 to 8.5.1.1

  1. Change to the eclipse subdirectory, which will be in the directory where you installed Installation Manager

         % pwd

         /opt/IBM/InstallationManager/eclipse

  1. Type in the following command to updates all the available products known to Installation Manager

         ./IBMIM –launcher.ini silent-install.ini updateAll

  1. Verified that the updates was installed successfully by looking at the log filed that we have previously created from step #3. A successful installation will have the following content in the log file.

        % cat /root/download/updates.txt

       <?xml version=”1.0” encoding=”UTF-8”>?
       <result>
       </result>

Part VII: Configuring Rational Integration Tester Platform Pack

Set up the HTTP/TCP Proxy for use with HTTP or HTTPS

By default, the Rational Test Control Panel (RTCP) installation listens for proxy registration on port 7819.

However, if you are setting up http and tcp for HTTPS, you will need modify the registration.xml file. To modify the registration.xml file you must change a directory to

       cd /opt/IBM/RIT-Platform/httptcp

Then modify the proxy’s configuration file registration.xml>> Save >> Restart your server.
